Joe Berisford - Photographer & Creative Director gives us the lowdown on all things visual...
Hey, I'm Joe and I'm a Staffordshire born Photographer and Creative Director. After graduating from Staffordshire University in 2017 with a degree in Media (Film) Production, I've been pursuing freelance work. During the last few years, I've had the chance to work alongside some talented and like-minded creatives & artists. Whether that be in the local Stoke music scene or some more well-established bands.
My style is very clean and very thought out, which I think is something a lot of people appreciate in the photography scene. I tend to strike a balance in my work between what would be classed as “street photography” mixed alongside a documentary style approach (to which I think my film-making background has lent itself). When combined, I feel like my work is very standout in terms of my style & it helps to showcase how I think when taking images. I tend to shoot a lot of my work on film, specifically medium format. This is another feature of my work in which I think a lot of people like, as I use a very narrow set of film stocks to create a specific look.
Shooting film was something that taught me a lot about the basics of photography; composing with light in black and white and a colour pallet (when obviously shooting colour) allowed me to experiment with different looks and tones within my work.
Currently, I've been shooting between two styles, one style relating to a longstanding project and the other is something I've been doing to up my composition game over the last year.
I’ve been shooting a project titled “these woods aren’t safe for us”, and it combines black and white photography with Twin Peaks / Stranger Things vibes. This will be my first publication, and I've been working alongside the very talented designer Daniel Etheridge (IG - daniel_etheridge) to create a physical photobook which I'll be printing when I'm happy with the final zine. The images within the project are based around the many folktale and supernatural elements of Staffordshire, as I've always been a fan of horror films and great directors such as John Carpenter, Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock. Many locations can initially seem normal, but I love to look at them and try and weave a story together that’s not there - and creating your own story is something I try to do.
The second style of shooting I've been loving is to create interesting images out of the more mundane aspects of everyday life. Documentary style shooting is something which I've always loved, whether that’s taking pictures of the legendary “T’Hut parties” (in which me and the guys from Face smashed many beers in my mates back garden), to documenting Amsterdam and the life within the city.
Amongst my own project work, I've been very lucky to work with some of the biggest bands in the scene and also bands I've loved for many years. I’ve worked previously with Enter Shikari & While She Sleeps on video and photography work, which is something that’s only pushed my creativity further. It’s very humbling to know that one of your favourite bands loves your work, and that’s what’s always pushing me to go out and shoot interesting projects.
My video work is also something that I've been able to experiment with. Always looking for people to collaborate with, I've been involved in the Stoke music scene for a few years now. Bands such as Fears Chella (IG – fearschella) and Divenire (IG – divenireuk) have worked closely with myself and we’re all on the same wavelength in terms of visual style and aesthetics. More recently, I've directed a music video for Of Legions (IG – of_legions_uk) which will be dropping soon, and I can’t wait to share with you what we've been working on together!
Finally, seeing the three guys at Face revamp the look and re-launch the brand is something that I'm proud of. I’ve been best mates with them for years and it's great to be able to make something together which showcases all our key strengths & combines so many ideas. If anybody wants to get involved and collaborate on something, then let’s do it!
